Does Freelancers have an upper hand over Full-Time Workers?
A tricky yet interesting question…
The year 2020 and the start of this decade appears to be favorable to freelancers. This is because when we were stuck in our homes due to the pandemic, people got to know more about freelancing.
Many full-time workers lost their jobs because of COVID-19 and here freelancing came to rescue.
How?
Well, freelancing gives the opportunity to be our own boss. It comes with perks like freedom to work anytime and freedom to choose how much you want to work. But on the other hand, freelancers doesn’t have have fixed income sources and their income varies every month.
So does freelancers actually overpowers full-time workers?
The answer to this question will vary for everyone.
Why?
Because there are people who are doing great as full-time workers or freelancers. But not every person who quits their Full-time job becomes a successful freelancer and not every freelancer has 6-figure income.
So let’s see what should be the answer of this question by understanding the pros and cons of both job types.
1. Full-time
People who are in 9–5 jobs enjoy various perks.
One, they have consistent income and on a fixed date of every month, they receive their paychecks.
Two, various companies provide extra facilities to their staff such as healthcare funds, paid leave, travel expenses for trips and more.
Three, full-time workers do get an idea of the tasks they are going to do and have to work consistently as part of their job.
Moreover, they have the room for growth and tend to get promoted within the company, over the years which isn’t the case with freelancers.
However, they don’t have the flexibility to work anytime. When they are in their offices, they have to perform various tasks before deadlines whether they are interested or not.
Apart from this, full-time workers have less time to follow their passion and interests as compared to freelancers.
2. Freelance
People who are in the freelance industry are not bounded by anything. They are responsible for their own actions. They are their own boss and can opt to work for whoever they want. They have the option to deny the client as well.
When to work, how to work and where to work are to be decided by themselves.
Looking at the advantages a freelancers have, no one can deny the fact that freelancers get the opportunity to engage with people from different companies, fields and locations. This helps them in their learning part.
At your university, when you interact with students from different cities and nations, you evolve as a person and gain perspective of various things. Same goes for freelancers too.
For beginners in the freelance industry, initially, this freedom feels amazing. However, eventually do they realize that freelancing is not the cup of tea of every person.
Like other jobs, freelancing comes with numerous ups and downs too.
Firstly, there are no sick days for freelancers. When they have a deadline of work, they have to push themselves no matter how bad their health is.
Secondly, payment of freelancers is not consistent. Some days are extremely busy while others are too slow with no clients to work with. Therefore, income doesn’t stay the same.
So what’s the answer to the question?
If you are an organized person who can manage time and work effectively. Both job types are ideal for you. It depends on the person. If you feel more secured while working full-time, you should put your efforts in that. But if you are self-motivated and can deal with situations and clients well, freelancing is for you.
P.S. whatever your job type or work is, make sure you are consistent. You can handle everything well if you work hard.
