Yes, You read that right.

Every field has good as well as bad people. Many help you in becoming better while others can become worst nightmares.

When you step into an industry, you come with no or less experience. At that point, you are prone to those bad ones who can destroy your determination. Yes. They can.

Let me tell you my story:

Recently, a person contacted me on my Telegram and asked about my experience, education and skills. He, then asked my pay rate. But for him, it was high. He wanted me to work on a very low price which I did not accepted at first.

He gave me a stupid reason for paying me less.

He said, “since the market is full of writers now, no writer gets to write at the price you offered. I have many other writers in my team who are working fine at the same price.”

I denied his offer. But I don’t know why my heart said, let’s give it a try for some time to explore.

So we both negotiated and I agreed at a good price. (better than the earlier one that he offered but still less than what I demanded)

I told him that I work on contracts and he asked me to write one for us.

I made one for a month and sent it to him.

He asked me if I only want to work for a month for him. I said yes. I can not promise to work for longer period at that price. But if I enjoy it, I will write a contract for next few months.

He said, “Sorry Anamika. I do not sign contracts for a month and if you can, just work on the word of mouth. I know there are plenty of people in the industry who cheat but I am not one of them.”

I said alright. I can agree that you aren’t. But I can not risk my one month salary for that. Hence, it was over.

I had a reason of not believing him. For me, what he said was a clear red flag.

Who will say I cheat people?

Who will agree that he doesn’t pay well?

Who will say, “I make them work for me without any contract so they can not trust their job?”

Listen Now!

If you are a new freelancer, never agree to work for any client if he is not willing to sign a contract with you. Never ever do that.

It is your duty to protect yourself at every stage especially the early stage.

If someone is not paying you after the work is finished, at least you have a written document where everything is stated about tasks, payment and legal actions if any party betray. Right?

Moreover, just because you are a beginner does not mean any prospect can underpay you.

Nope.

You also have skills. You work hard to meet the deadlines. You deserve to be paid good.

Final words

In order to survive in the industry of freelance, start working on contracts from the very first day.

This will act as a trust factor which will encourage you to give the best work to your clients.

For any query related to contracts, like how to write one, etc.
