Most writers fall into a trap in their early writing careers.

About 75% of us look at the big influencers for teaching us how and what to write. They will ask you to find your niche first, then write samples and thus, build a good portfolio.

You need to perform these tasks, but not in the first place.

If not that, then what?

What do you need?

If this is your question, I got your back.

In this article, you will become familiar with 13 basic and foundational things you need and do not need when starting your writing career.

Write these points like her, but in your mind :)

You do not need to worry about —

  1. Not having a profitable skill.

In the beginning, it is completely normal if you do not know which skill to learn that is in demand. Instead, explore and choose the one you are interested in.

2. Spending money on buying domains and courses to learn.

When you are stepping into a field, try to save money. Write on platforms like Medium and learn. You do not need to spend any penny until you make some.

3. What your relatives and friends will think.

It is your life and only you can take decisions for yourself. Do not care what others think about you and your life.

4. A fancy portfolio

Yes, you need a portfolio to get clients, but not in the beginning. Explore your interests. Write what you want to write about. Learn.

P.S. Your write-ups on Medium will act like your online portfolio, which you can show to your prospective clients.

5. Not having experience.

No one has experience before they actually start producing content. Start and eventually, you will improve and gain experience.

6. How to talk to clients.

Dealing with clients is a skill. It is completely fine if you are an introvert or do not know how to behave on discovery calls. You can learn it.

Things you need —

7. A Growth Mindset.

Having a positive mindset is a must. Do not make excuses like you don’t have resources to learn (free courses are there), you don’t have a niche (explore), etc. Instead, find ways to learn and grow.

8. Excitement to experiment.

As a writer, you need to present non-obvious content to your readers so that they choose you over other writers because you give more to them. For that, you should be ready for experiments.

9. Self-Confidence.

If you are not confident about yourself and your skills, how will others be confident that you are a good fit for a job?

Be confident :)

10. Baby Steps.

When it comes to writing, take baby steps to move ahead and grow rather than thinking about ways to make a long jump. This will put you at huge risk or failure.

11. Social Media.

You are a writer. How will you network with other writers? How will you reach out to your prospective clients?

Through Social Media, right?

Be comfortable with platforms like LinkedIn, Instagram (for personal branding) and Twitter — great for getting clients.

12. love the process.

Many times, we think about making money and writing like a pro. But we often forget that we should love and enjoy the process too.

13. Support yourself.

Train yourself to be your biggest cheerleader. Motivate yourself to make progress. Encourage yourself on weak days and keep going.

Final Words

As a newbie writer, you have to take care of numerous things.

You will feel upset at some point of time and some days, you may want to give up.

But do not do that. If you love writing and you are determined to become a writer, you will shine.

Thanks and take care :)
