I am on Medium for 5 months and have seen plenty of writers falling into the trap!

Writers, you must have seen tonnes of profiles on Medium by this time. Many must be having a high following number and a very low follower rate. Others are commenting “Please follow me back”, “Follow me”, and “I followed you now you follow me” under your posts.

Oh, Anamika!

I’m not a player.

— If you are in this zone, congratulations.

In case you are one of those writers, sorry but this is toxic for your growth.

See, this followers rule has two versions:

One,

You follow a lot of people, wait until some of them follow you back and you unfollow.

Two,

You follow others and ask them to follow you back to get followers on your account.

I can not completely blame you for following any of these strategies. Many Top writers publicly recommend doing it. However, you are wrong by listening to them and doing it blindly.

Do you know this suggestion of theirs is actually one of the most detrimental things you can do on Medium?

In fact, you can be banned as well. We have a new Medium CEO Tony Stubblebine, so you never know if any such policy comes out.

You may join MPP if it’s available in your country. But you won’t be able to call yourself a successful writer.

You can also brag by saying, “Oh, yeah! I have n+ followers on Medium”.

But tell me now, can you say you get n+ claps on your articles actively???

No, you can’t.

People who follow you back with this formula, become your followers. But they do not care about you and your content at all.

Mark my words.

You can not get an engaging audience like this.

My job is to make you aware of the side effects of these stupid strategies. So, here we go!

#1 You get trapped. You can not think of genuine ways.#2 You get followers, not a supporting audience.#3 You may get views, but not a good read ratio.#4 You can see numbers but never progress.

Trust me, the Medium community is highly supportive and friendly. Even if you do not get into such tactics, you will still be able to make it on Medium.

In order to grow and improve, you need to understand the difference between followers and audience.

Followers are like the citizens who live in your city. However, they don’t know anything about you like your family and friends (your audience) do.

So, who do you want? Followers or a lovely audience?

The choice is yours.

Thanks for reading and take care my lovely audience :)

P.S. I want to know you guys more. So, follow me on Twitter, and let’s connect.
